5 Homemade face masks

5 Homemade face masks

Tell your skin we’ve heard its call and we’re here to help - with 5 homemade face masks for 5 different skin emergencies. Because believe it or not, you do not need to visit the beauty salon to achieve glowing skin, your kitchen has everything you need. The best part? No hidden chemicals. Not one.

SOS CALL 1 // “Acne, help!”

You will need:

  • 2 - 3 egg whites
  • Cotton round or a big chunk of cotton wool

Instructions:

  1. Separate the egg whites from the yolk and pour into a bowl
  2. Dip a cotton round or a big chunk of cotton wool into the egg white mix and dab over your face, neck and décolletage area
  3. Let the mask sit for 20 minutes and then wash off with a damp cloth

How it works.
Egg whites contain an enzyme called lysozyme which kills acne-causing bacteria. We know you’re thinking “Egg on my FACE! Really!?” But trust us on this one, it works.

SOS CALL 2 // “Dry skin, help!”

You will need:

  • 1 avocado
  • 2 tablespoons of plain yoghurt
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Instructions:

  1. Mash up the avocado
  2. Add the yoghurt, olive oil & honey
  3. Mix well and apply to your face, neck and décolletage area
  4. Let the mask sit for 20 minutes and then wash off with warm water

How it works:
The omega fatty acids in avocado and olive oil help seal cracks between skin cells, while honey and yoghurt soothe the skin. Uh oh, the combination of the words “honey and yoghurt” just got your taste buds going, didn’t they? Try to resist eating the mask off your face if you can, it doesn’t work as well if it’s in your stomach.

SOS CALL 3 // “Pigmentation, help!”

You will need:

  • 1/2 teaspoons of turmeric powder
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of raw honey

Instructions:

  1. Spoon the honey into a bowl
  2. Add the turmeric powder
  3. Mix well and apply to your face, neck and décolletage area
  4. Leave on the skin for 10 minutes and then wash off with warm water

How it works:
Honey has skin bleaching properties that help lighten pigmentation and turmeric helps balance melanin production that treats the pigmentation internally.

SOS CALL 4 // “Wrinkles, help!”

You will need:

  • 1 banana
  • 1/4 cup of plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons of honey

Instructions:

  1. Mash the banana in a bowl and then add the yoghurt and honey
  2. Gently massage the mask over your face
  3. Leave on for 20 minutes and then wash off with warm water

How it works:
The lactic acid in yogurt helps dissolve dead skin cells. The high vitamin C content in bananas maintains the natural and youthful glow of the skin. And the natural antioxidants in honey rejuvenate skin cells.

SOS CALL 5 // “Clogged pores, help!”

You will need:

  • 2 teaspoons of oatmeal
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda

Instructions:

  1. Combine the oatmeal and baking soda in a bowl
  2. Slowly add a few drops of water to create a paste
  3. Gently massage the paste over your face and let it dry
  4. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then wash off with warm water

How it works:
Oats contain compounds called saponins, which are natural cleansers. They remove the dirt and oil that clog the pores. Baking soda has antibacterial properties which prevent breakouts.

Whatever your skin emergency, do not panic. Keep calm and head to the kitchen, or, to your nearest grocery store. And spend the money you would have spent on an expensive facial, on groceries for the week. How’s that for practical?
