Former Mr PE, Nicholas Affat shares his secrets on how to stay positive!

“We don't see things as they are but rather we see things as we are.” It is all about perspective, and it is a choice you make! Okay you are right – it is not always that easy, there is no secret formula, and no special recipe. None! But, it is all up to you, and you have a choice on how you are going to see the life.

I was always convinced that it was true, you know, that happiness is a choice, but it wasn’t until this year that I really had to put this to the test. My year as Mr PE has required that I be a proud ambassador for our city, a role model to our youth as well as an active citizen. No easy task in today’s crazy world! All of that on top of my responsibility towards the three official beneficiaries, many sponsors and plenty of social commitments – I felt as though I was spreading myself very thin.

Regardless, I had the choice to say: “Yes!”, the choice to stay positive and to put my head down and get on with it. Along the way I picked up some really handy tricks to keep this (very genuine) smile on my face….. Follow along:

1.    Always get up on the right side of the bed

Get your morning routine waxed – it needs to be simple, stress free and seamless. That way, you will leave the door with enough gusto to take on whatever may be thrown your way!

2.    Cut out the nonsense

If it isn’t adding value to your life – you don’t need it! It is your responsibility to prune back the nonsense that bogs up your days.

3.    It’s not what you know, it’s who you know

Surround yourself with people who fuel your spirit and challenge you to be better. Do this for the people in your life too.

4.    Shhhh!

Spoil yourself with an hour a day to recharge your batteries, to re-focus your thoughts and to refresh your mind. It is okay to take some time out for yourself.

Life is for being happy and making the best of everything that comes your way. Always smile and think positive, because when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change!
