What the Guru ate: The beauty of the buddha bowl

We often begin a new year with the best of intentions. We sign that gym contract. We vow to get our daily dose of fresh greens. Perhaps there’s even a shiny blender in the kitchen, just out the box, ripe and ready for whipping up power smoothies. Of course, in reality, most of us are simply wondering how the hell we found ourselves here, the year already passing us by at the speed of light. It’s hectic. We know. But the busier we get, the more we cheat when it comes to our health. Deadlines loom and we tell ourselves that sleep is for sissies. Bottomless coffee becomes the order of the day. And honestly, who has time to pack lunch? It’s all systems go and a mad dash out the door! But no. Regroup. And say hello to the Buddha bowl!

The beauty of the Buddha bowl is that the options are truly endless. But imagine, in its essence, a bowl brimming with nourishing, comforting foods to fill and sustain you, body, mind and soul. Incorporating the eating principles of Eastern wellness practice, a Buddha bowl will usually include raw or roasted vegetables, beans, a whole grain (like brown rice or quinoa) and sometimes even fish, all within one meal. They are especially ideal for vegans or vegetarians but ultimately, they’re packed to the hilt with goodness for one and all, young and old alike.

Super keen to give it a go but a bit short on where to start? Have no fear. The internet is simply swimming with ideas for food and flavour combinations when it comes to these healthy meal options, so it’s all just a google away. But please, the sky is the limit so don’t stop there… From coriander pesto to tahini dressing (or perhaps a spicy sauce if you like your heat), drizzle away to your heart’s content. Maybe your bowl is missing a little crunch? Toss in some nuts and seeds or even some dried seaweed and wonton crisps. With the array of recipes readily available online, and your own imagination to boot, you’ll be munching your way to better health with each bite. Just a final word to the wise. Be sure to label your lunch when you leave it in the clutches of the staffroom fridge. Trust us. Your co-worker’s drive-through ‘happy meal’ will be looking awfully unappetising after they’ve spied out your colourful and tasty ensemble!
